Why Is a Crypto Exchange Asking for Bank Statements or Tax Documents?
A crypto exchange may ask for bank statements or tax documents to confirm your identity or address, explain the origin of a deposit, or understand how your wealth was accumulated. Those are different checks, so first ask which one the document must answer. Verify the request in the genuine app, identify the relevant transaction or period, and send only a suitable record through the secure channel. The exact requirement depends on the provider, account and applicable jurisdiction.
Find Out What the Document Is Meant to Prove
The same bank statement can be used for different purposes. Read the surrounding words in the notice before uploading the first file you can find.
| Request says | What the reviewer may need | What a statement should show |
|---|---|---|
| Proof of address | Your current residential address | Name, address, issuer and a qualifying recent date |
| Proof of funding account | You control the bank account used to pay | Holder, account identifier and relevant transfer |
| Source of Funds | Origin and movement of the money behind a deposit | Income or sale credit, outgoing payment and links to crypto purchase |
| Source of Wealth | Broader history of how assets were built | Income, business, investment, sale or inheritance over an appropriate period |
| Transaction review | Purpose and counterparties of a particular payment | Dates, amounts, recipient and reference matching the transaction |
A tax filing may show income or reported gains for a year. It seldom shows that a specific bank payment funded a particular crypto deposit. A statement showing a transfer to an exchange may prove the payment but not the original income. The reviewer may need both sides of the chain.
The fuller distinction between Source of Funds and Source of Wealth helps determine which record is relevant.
Why Providers Make These Requests
Financial-crime controls require a provider to know its customers and understand risks associated with activity. The EBA’s guidance on ML/TF risk factors for crypto-asset service providers describes the risk-based context. A statement or tax request can also arise from periodic customer information updates or a provider policy. It does not, by itself, mean that the customer has committed a crime or that the tax authority has accused them of anything.
The request is often prompted by a gap between the account profile and activity: a large deposit relative to declared income, a new funding source, repeated P2P transfers, business money in a personal account or a deposit from an outside wallet. Those are possible review questions, not facts established about any individual case. Ask which transactions and dates are under review.
Coinbase’s own document examples include bank statements for fiat funding, employment records and tax filings for income or wealth, and exchange or wallet statements for crypto deposits. The examples demonstrate why one document type cannot answer every question; they do not create a uniform rule for all exchanges.
What a Bank Statement Can and Cannot Establish
A suitable statement can connect a named customer to an account and show the receipt of wages, sale proceeds, a loan or other funds. It can also show the outgoing transfer to the crypto platform or another service. Check that the name, institution, dates, amount, currency and payment reference are visible.
It may not identify the ultimate owner of an external wallet, show which token was purchased or explain money that arrived from an unrelated third party. If the crypto was bought on Exchange A and deposited to Exchange B, add the purchase, withdrawal and deposit records.
For a complete proof chain, see How to Prove Source of Funds for Crypto. Match the fiat and crypto legs rather than treating the statement as a complete answer.
If a bank statement shows a payment from a company, a spouse or a P2P buyer, explain the relationship with a contract, distribution record or order history where relevant. Do not hide a different sender name; unexplained differences are more difficult to review later.
What a Tax Document Can and Cannot Establish
A filed return, tax assessment or official tax summary may support income, business profits, property sale or reported crypto gains for a period. It can be useful when the exchange asks about overall wealth or a historic source. A draft, self-generated estimate or tax-software output should be labelled accurately.
Tax records often work at an annual level and may not show receipt of funds, a bank transfer, an individual trade or control of a wallet. Add the bank credit, sale completion, exchange trade and transaction record as needed. A tax filing for one year should not be presented as proof of income from a different period without an explanation.
Kraken’s SoF and SoW guidance distinguishes a document showing how money was earned from one showing that it was actually received and transferred to the platform. The documents it accepts and its redaction policy are Kraken-specific. Use the current instructions for your own account.
How to Respond Safely and Efficiently
- Save the full request, reference number, deadline and affected account function.
- Confirm in the provider’s app or website that the request is genuine. Do not upload bank or tax records to a link sent by an unknown caller.
- Ask whether the statement is for address, funding account, Source of Funds or Source of Wealth if the wording is vague.
- Select the relevant period and match each requested fact to a document.
- Add a short cover note explaining any difference in names, currencies, fees or timing.
- Upload through the secure portal and preserve the exact files and confirmation.
Suggested note:
“The statement from [bank] covers [dates]. Entry on [date] shows [source and amount]; entry on [date] shows the transfer used to purchase [asset] on [platform]. The attached trade and withdrawal records connect that purchase to the deposit under review. Please confirm if the remaining question concerns the origin of income, the funding account or the wallet route.”
If the provider requests more than you believe is necessary, ask which field and period it needs and whether unrelated information may be masked. Do not remove the name, payment, issuer or dates needed for review without its agreement. Keep an unaltered original.
Never send a seed phrase, private key, password, live 2FA code or remote device access to “verify” a statement.
What If You Do Not Have the Requested Document?
Explain the reason precisely. You might have been paid as a freelancer, inherited crypto directly, used a former bank, bought coins years ago or received proceeds from a company.
Offer equivalent records that establish the same fact: invoices plus bank credits, probate plus distribution, archived statements, platform exports, a sale contract plus settlement or a P2P order plus payment and delivery.
Do not create a false document or substitute a balance screenshot for an income record without saying so. Ask the provider whether an alternative is acceptable and what is still missing.

If Assets Remain Restricted
A complete submission may lead to approval, a targeted follow-up, continued review, refusal of a transaction or account closure with separate instructions for remaining assets. Record what you sent and when. If the exchange repeats the same question, refer to the file and page that answered it and ask what additional fact it needs.
For an in-scope EU crypto-asset service provider, MiCA Article 71 requires a free and transparent complaint process. The complaint route can address poor handling or a disputed decision, but it does not guarantee acceptance of your records.

Common Mistakes
- Sending a bank balance screenshot when the provider asks how a transaction was funded. Show the incoming source and payment route.
- Uploading a tax return without the relevant bank receipt. Add evidence that the money was actually received.
- Sending a heavily cropped statement. Preserve the fields that establish holder, issuer, period and transaction.
- Ignoring a company-to-personal transfer. Show the authorised basis for moving business money.
- Sending sensitive records to an unverified “compliance officer” on a messenger. Confirm the request inside the platform.
- Treating a request as proof that taxes are unpaid. Identify the actual provider question before making assumptions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I refuse to provide a tax return?
You can ask why it is needed and offer another document that proves the same fact. The provider may still require sufficient evidence under its applicable obligations and policy, and can restrict service if it cannot complete a review. Do not assume one alternative will necessarily be accepted.
Can I hide unrelated payments on my statement?
Ask the platform what may be redacted. Some providers allow masking of sensitive numbers or unrelated transactions; others require an unredacted record for a particular check. The relevant account holder, dates, amounts and transfer route must remain verifiable.
Why do they want documents after years of using the account?
Customer information can be refreshed and new transactions can raise different questions. A request made later does not necessarily mean the earlier verification was invalid. Ask for the relevant period and transaction so you can answer proportionately.
Is a crypto tax software report enough?
It can organise gains and transactions, but it is generally a derived record based on imported data. Provide underlying exchange exports, wallet transfers and bank entries where possible. Label the report as a summary rather than an original account statement.
Does sending a tax document mean the exchange will report me to tax authorities?
The request alone does not establish what reporting applies in your country or to that provider. Ask the provider about its privacy notice and consult a local tax adviser for your filing obligations. Do not infer a legal conclusion from the document request itself.
