Crypto KYC Verification Failed or Rejected: What to Do
If crypto KYC verification fails, first find out whether the problem is an image or upload error, a mismatch in account details, an unsupported document, or a separate eligibility decision. Save the exact error and verify the request inside the exchange’s genuine app. Correct the specific issue and resubmit through its official flow; if the reason is unclear or assets are already held, ask support for the next permitted step. Rules and remedies depend on the provider, your residence and the account type.
Diagnose the Failure Before Another Attempt
Know Your Customer (KYC) checks identify the customer and keep relevant information current. “Rejected” can describe an automated capture problem or a substantive review decision. Those should not receive the same response.
| Message or symptom | Possible issue | Useful next action |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry, cropped or glare warning | Image cannot be read | Retake the original document in even light, showing all edges |
| Name or date mismatch | Profile differs from ID | Compare the exact legal name, date of birth and profile fields |
| Document not supported or expired | Type, country or validity issue | Check the provider’s country-specific accepted list |
| Selfie or liveness failure | Camera, lighting or face match problem | Follow the app’s live capture steps on a supported device |
| Address proof rejected | Old date, wrong name or missing address | Upload a qualifying recent document with the required fields |
| Repeated attempts, no specific error | Manual review, technical issue or policy decision | Stop random resubmissions and request a case-specific explanation |
For example, Coinbase’s EU customer verification guidance lists accepted ID types for the countries it serves, requires an ID and live selfie, and describes possible address documents. Its requirements and timelines belong to Coinbase’s process; do not apply them to another exchange.
Fix the Information and Capture Quality
Check the Account Profile
Compare your account’s legal name, birth date, country and address with the documents you intend to use. A transliteration, middle name, changed surname or old address can create a mismatch. Use the provider’s prescribed correction process; do not change factual details merely to make an upload pass. If a legal name changed, prepare the relevant official document.
Capture the Original Document Properly
Use an unexpired supported ID, photograph the original rather than a screen, and keep all required edges and information visible. Avoid glare, filters, heavy compression and alterations. If the provider requests both sides, include both. A successful upload is not the same as successful verification: wait for the actual decision.
Complete Selfie and Address Steps
Use a device with camera permissions and stable connection. Follow the live selfie prompts exactly. For proof of address, check that the document is recent enough and displays your name, address, issuer and date.
A bank statement used for address verification serves a different purpose from a Source of Funds statement. If the platform asks for financial documents, see Why Is a Crypto Exchange Asking for Bank Statements or Tax Documents?.
Coinbase’s identity verification troubleshooting guide advises users to use a current app or browser, make the ID fully visible, allow camera access and follow the live selfie instructions. These are practical examples, not a universal bypass for a refusal based on eligibility or compliance.
If Repeated Attempts Fail
Take a screenshot of the full error with its time and the stage where it appeared. Save the document type and issuing country you tried, but do not send sensitive ID images in an ordinary unsolicited email.
In the official support case, write:
“Identity verification failed at [ID/selfie/address stage] on [date]. The error says [exact wording]. My account country is [country] and the document type is [type]. Please confirm whether the issue is capture quality, unsupported document, profile information or manual review, and tell me the secure next step.”
If there is a waiting period after attempts, respect it. Do not create a second account or use another person’s ID to avoid a block. A platform may need manual verification or may tell you it does not support the document, residence or account type. Ask what happens to assets already on the account and how any permitted withdrawal process works.
Distinguish KYC from Other Restrictions
Identity verification proves who the customer is; it does not establish how a crypto deposit was acquired. A platform can accept your ID and later ask for Source of Funds. Conversely, a valid bank statement explaining a deposit will not fix a rejected selfie.
| Problem | Main evidence | Route |
|---|---|---|
| KYC capture failure | Supported ID, good image, matching profile | Verification flow and technical support |
| Address mismatch | Recent acceptable proof of address | Profile correction and secure upload |
| Source of Funds enquiry | Income, bank, purchase and wallet trail | Compliance ticket and specific transaction response |
| Suspended withdrawal | Status, funding method, security and compliance notices | Existing withdrawal or restriction case |
If the exchange asks you to prove crypto origin after your ID is accepted, use How to Prove Source of Funds for Crypto.
If funds are held and the account is restricted, preserve both the KYC result and the separate restriction notice. See Crypto Exchange Account Frozen or Restricted: What to Do.
What EU Rules Do and Do Not Decide
EU service providers have customer due diligence and risk management obligations. The EBA’s crypto ML/TF guidance explains the risk-based regulatory context. It does not prescribe that every blurry image must be accepted or that passing ID verification gives permanent access to all products. Supported countries and documents remain provider-specific, subject to applicable law.
For a provider within MiCA’s scope, Article 71 requires a free and transparent complaint procedure. Use it when support has failed to address a coherent issue or the treatment of assets is disputed. A complaint can seek a reasoned outcome and an appropriate remedy; it cannot turn an unsupported document into an accepted one by itself.
If Assets Are Already on the Platform
Record the balance, asset, deposit and withdrawal history, account notices, dates of failed attempts and support case number. Ask whether trading or withdrawals are available while verification is pending, what further verification is required, and what procedure applies if the account will be closed.
Avoid making more deposits until you understand the restriction. Preserve any formal deadline and do not assume the provider will automatically return assets to an arbitrary external wallet.
If the provider confirms that it cannot verify you, ask for its decision in writing and for the lawful withdrawal or refund process, if available. The destination and method may be subject to its checks.
A significant balance, inconsistent instructions or unclear contracting entity may justify legal review. See When Do You Need a Crypto Recovery Lawyer?.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Repeating the same failed image. Fix lighting, framing or the supported document type first.
- Editing an ID photo or using another person’s document. Submit authentic records for the actual account holder.
- Sending identification files to a social-media “support” agent. Verify the request in the app and use the official portal.
- Assuming a bank statement fixes every rejection. Confirm whether the exchange needs address, identity or Source of Funds proof.
- Opening new accounts to bypass verification. This can complicate ownership and review.
- Ignoring a separate closure or withdrawal notice. Preserve it and respond within any stated deadline.
Never share a seed phrase, private key, account password, live 2FA code or unrestricted remote access with anyone offering to fix KYC. No genuine identity review requires control of a self-hosted wallet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can support manually approve my ID?
It depends on the provider and the reason for failure. Support may arrange a further review or explain a correction path, but it may not be able to override an unsupported document or policy decision. Give the exact error rather than requesting a generic bypass.
What if my legal name changed?
Check the platform’s profile update route and prepare the official record of the change, such as a marriage or name-change certificate where relevant. Do not open a new account with a slightly different name. Ask which record the provider will accept.
Will my crypto be lost if KYC is rejected?
Rejection does not automatically establish that assets are forfeited. The provider may restrict the account, seek further verification or set a controlled withdrawal process. Ask for the written decision and applicable procedure; seek advice if a significant balance remains inaccessible.
Can I verify with a foreign passport?
That depends on the provider’s supported countries and the account’s registered residence. A passport’s issuing country and your residence may be treated separately. Check the current country-specific list rather than assuming all passports are accepted.
Is KYC the same as an AML review?
KYC is the identity and customer information component. An AML review can also ask about transactions, counterparties and asset origin. See Crypto AML Review: What Happens When an Account Is Under Review? if the request goes beyond ID and address.
