Crypto Proof of Funds: Documents Exchanges May Request
An exchange asking for “proof of funds” may want to see that you have money, where a particular deposit came from, or how you accumulated your overall wealth. Read the precise request before choosing files. Start by saving its notice and the relevant transaction details, then submit documents that match the question, account name and dates. Accepted evidence varies by provider, country and the risk it is reviewing.
First Identify Which Proof It Means
The phrase is used inconsistently in support messages. Ask what fact the provider needs established if the request is vague.
| Request | Core question | Typical evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Proof of balance or available funds | Do you currently hold a specified amount? | Recent named bank or account statement |
| Source of Funds | Where did the assets for this deposit or transaction originate, and how did they arrive? | Income or sale record plus bank, purchase and transfer trail |
| Source of Wealth | How was your broader net worth accumulated over time? | Tax, employment, business, investment, inheritance or property history |
| Proof of wallet or account control | Is the sending account or address under your control? | Exchange account profile and transfer record, or an approved wallet verification method |
Proof of current balance does not explain the source of a past deposit. Conversely, a tax return showing historical income may not prove that a present account holds enough funds. Source of Funds versus Source of Wealth deserves separate treatment if both are requested.
Documents for a Fiat-Funded Crypto Purchase
For a bank-funded purchase, the reviewer often needs to see the payment chain. The following records answer different questions.
| Document | What it can prove | What to check before upload |
|---|---|---|
| Bank statement | Named account, incoming income, outgoing transfer to a platform | Account holder, date, amount, counterparty and reference are visible |
| Payslip or employer letter | Employment income and period | The income period aligns with the bank credit |
| Tax filing or assessment | Reported income or gains over a tax period | It is complete and from the relevant year; it may not show payment movement |
| Sale agreement and settlement record | Origin of property, business or investment sale proceeds | Ownership, price, completion and receipt are connected |
| Exchange purchase and trade history | Fiat-to-crypto acquisition and amounts | Export includes account identifiers, trades, fees and dates |
| Card or payment-service statement | A card or e-money funding leg | Transaction to the exchange can be matched to the purchase |
Coinbase’s Source of Funds document guidance lists examples for fiat funding, crypto deposits and different wealth sources. These are examples of what one provider may accept, not a rule that every exchange must accept a particular document. Some providers specify a recent statement period or require an unredacted copy; follow the actual notice.
Documents for a Crypto-to-Crypto Deposit
If assets arrived from another exchange or a self-hosted wallet, a bank statement alone may leave a gap. Build a small set with distinct roles:
- The sending exchange’s account statement shows the holder and withdrawal.
- The trade report shows how the withdrawn asset was acquired.
- The complete transaction hash and network show the on-chain transfer.
- Wallet history shows intermediate inflows and outflows, if a wallet or bridge was used.
- The receiving exchange’s deposit record matches the amount and time, allowing for network fees.
An internal transfer between two accounts at the same service may not have a public blockchain hash. In that case, obtain the platform’s internal reference and statements. For P2P trades, retain the order, payment, counterparty details available to you and receipt of crypto. For mining or staking, retain platform or pool payouts and the wallet trail. A step-by-step transaction chain is explained in How to Prove Source of Funds for Crypto.
Documents for Less Common Sources
Gift or Inheritance
A gift letter or estate document should identify the giver or estate, the recipient, amount, date and basis of the transfer. Pair it with the bank credit or crypto transfer. A letter alone may not prove actual receipt. The platform may seek information about the original owner under its own rules.
Business Proceeds
Company registration, financial statements, invoices or tax filings can explain business revenue. Show how the value reached the account holder: company bank receipt, salary, dividend, distribution or other documented transfer. Avoid treating company assets and a director’s personal assets as interchangeable.
Long-Held Crypto
Historic exchange exports, bank purchase records and successive wallet transfers can establish a plausible acquisition path. Save original exports and separately label any reconstruction made from an explorer. If a former exchange is closed, explain the missing archive and provide other contemporaneous evidence. Do not fabricate trades to fill a gap.
Sale or Conversion of Other Assets
Use the sale contract, broker statement or closing record, then a bank credit and transfer or purchase history. If only part of the proceeds funded crypto, show the relevant amount rather than asserting that the full sale price became a deposit.
Kraken’s explanation of SoF and SoW requests notes that proof of earning and proof of receipt may be separate documents, and that a further record can be needed to show assets entering the account. The examples and formatting conditions are those of Kraken, not a universal EU checklist.
Check the File Against the Request
Before submitting, make a two-column index: “provider question” and “file answering it.” A useful packet often has fewer documents than an unfiltered account archive.
- Match the name: an account in a partner’s or company’s name requires an explanation and supporting authority or transfer records.
- Match the time: a current payslip will not, by itself, explain a purchase made years ago.
- Match amounts: note conversion rates, fees, partial payments and several purchases combined into one deposit.
- Match the asset and network: USDT on one chain is not the same transfer as USDT on another.
- Match the identifier: keep a full transaction hash and wallet address, not a shortened display string.
Submit in the existing secure ticket or portal and ask the provider to specify any missing field. Do not send an ID photo or bank statement to an unsolicited email. Keep original exports and an exact copy of what you supplied. A crypto AML review can generate a second, narrower question after the first packet.
Why the Request Can Be Legitimate
EU providers apply risk-based customer due diligence and transaction controls. The EBA’s crypto-asset ML/TF risk-factor guidance addresses how providers assess risk in this sector. It does not mean every customer must upload all documents listed above, nor does a document request prove suspicion of a crime. Different checks can also arise from a provider’s own policy or its obligations in another jurisdiction.
If the provider stops withdrawals while it reviews documents, keep the issue separate from whether a submitted PDF is acceptable. Record the restriction notice, requested items, submission date and response. A frozen account may require a formal complaint if the provider gives no meaningful response after a complete submission. For an in-scope EU CASP, MiCA Article 71 sets out its complaint-handling obligations; it does not set one mandatory list of source documents.
Frequent Submission Mistakes
- Uploading a wallet balance screenshot as proof of origin. Add acquisition and transfer records.
- Sending a tax return for a bank transfer without the bank entry. Add proof the income was received and moved.
- Providing a contract with no settlement record. Show the actual payment as well as the entitlement.
- Cropping out the name, date or relevant line to protect privacy. Ask what redaction is permitted and preserve the required context.
- Using a manually edited spreadsheet as if it were a provider export. Label your summary and keep the underlying files.
- Repeatedly opening new support tickets. Keep the evidence and follow-up in one case thread where possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Must I send a full bank statement?
Follow the provider’s written instructions. Some platforms may accept a selected period or allow masking of unrelated account details, while others require an unredacted document. Ask before changing a required field and use a verified upload channel.
Are screenshots accepted?
They can show an account page or wallet transaction where no export exists, but they may lack context or be easy to crop. Prefer original provider statements and CSVs when available. Include the visible name, date, amount and relevant address or reference.
Does a tax document prove my crypto is legal?
It may support declared income or transactions for a period, but it cannot, on its own, establish every acquisition, wallet transfer or beneficial owner. Pair it with payment and platform records. Whether it satisfies the request is the provider’s decision.
Can the exchange ask about an old deposit?
It may request updated information or review historic activity under its applicable obligations and policies. Ask which transaction and period it wants explained, then provide what you can retrieve. State clearly if an old provider no longer offers records.
What if none of its examples fits my situation?
Explain the real source, propose equivalent original records and ask what fact the provider still needs proved. Do not select an inaccurate category simply to pass a form. A lawyer may help with a complex or contradictory record through When Do You Need a Crypto Recovery Lawyer?.
