Crypto Exchange Account Frozen or Restricted: What to Do
If your crypto exchange account is frozen or restricted, save the notice, identify which functions are blocked and respond through the platform’s verified support or compliance channel. A restriction may concern identity checks, the origin of funds, account security or a legal order; it does not by itself establish wrongdoing or mean the assets are lost. Prepare evidence addressing the specific request, then use the formal complaint procedure if the response remains inadequate. The available remedy depends on the provider’s legal entity, the reason for the restriction and the applicable jurisdiction.
Start with the Exact Restriction
“Account frozen” is often a user’s description rather than the exchange’s formal classification. Check whether you can log in, trade, deposit, withdraw crypto and withdraw fiat. A hold affecting one withdrawal or asset requires a different response from a complete account suspension.
| What you see | What it may mean | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Login blocked or security alert | Suspected account takeover or an authentication problem. | Unknown sessions, password changes, withdrawal alerts and the official account recovery route. |
| Trading works but withdrawals do not | A withdrawal hold, compliance review or security restriction. | Whether all withdrawals are blocked, the notice date and any stated expiry. |
| Identity or address documents rejected | Incomplete KYC, meaning Know Your Customer verification. | The precise rejection reason, accepted document type and matching account details. |
| Questions about income or deposits | Source of Funds or enhanced due diligence review. | Which deposits, dates, amounts and counterparties the request covers. |
| A particular transfer is pending | Missing transfer information, network issues or manual review. | Transaction status, network, beneficiary details and whether a hash exists. |
| Closure notice or legal restriction | Termination of service or action connected to an authority. | The legal entity, notice wording, deadlines and any permitted withdrawal procedure. |
Also check the official status page for service incidents. If an unfamiliar website demands a separate tax or deposit to release funds, first verify that it is a genuine exchange. Paying more into a suspected fake platform is not a compliance remedy.
Why an Exchange May Restrict an Account
Compliance Checks Can Continue After Onboarding
Passing identity verification does not end all future checks. A provider may need updated information or an explanation of transactions that do not fit the account profile. Possible triggers include third-party payments, substantial changes in activity, old P2P purchases, corporate funds entering a personal account or an unclear sequence of wallet transfers. These are possible explanations, not proof of the reason for your restriction.
Source of Funds concerns the origin of the particular assets under review. Source of Wealth concerns how you accumulated your overall wealth. A payslip can explain income, but it does not necessarily show how a specific crypto deposit reached the exchange.
Transfer Information May Be Incomplete
The EBA Travel Rule guidance addresses checks for missing or incomplete information accompanying transfers. In practice, a provider may ask about the sender, recipient, sending service or a self-hosted wallet. A transaction hash alone does not answer every identity question, and using a personal wallet does not automatically make a transfer prohibited.
Security and Legal Holds Need Different Responses
A password reset or suspected unauthorised login may lead to a security hold under the provider’s rules. A restriction connected to sanctions or an authority’s order has a different legal basis. Ask which category applies to the extent the provider can disclose it, rather than repeatedly sending income records for a security problem.
There are limits to what a provider can explain: Article 39 of Directive (EU) 2015/849 restricts disclosure of certain suspicious-transaction reporting and related analysis. National implementation matters. A limited explanation therefore does not necessarily mean no review is taking place, but it also does not prove that the restriction is justified.
Your First Response in Five Steps
-
Preserve the Account Record
Save the restriction message, account identifier, balances by asset, affected withdrawal requests and all ticket references. Download transaction and trading history while access remains available. Keep original emails and note when the restriction first appeared, including the time zone.
-
Verify the Request and Secure Access
Open the exchange directly through its official application or known website. Confirm that the document request appears in the authenticated account or existing ticket. If there are signs of takeover, secure your email and account, terminate unknown sessions and alert the security team before treating this as routine compliance.
-
Identify What Is Missing
List every question and deadline in the notice. Match each question to a document or explanation. If the request only says “provide Source of Funds”, ask which transactions and period it concerns and what document formats are accepted. Submit available relevant evidence without inventing missing details.
-
Send One Coherent Submission
Reply in the existing compliance thread or designated upload portal. Start with a short explanation, attach an indexed set of documents and identify the transaction each file supports. Use a single chronology and reconcile differences in currency, fees, dates or account names.
-
Record the Next Decision Point
Ask the provider to acknowledge receipt, identify outstanding items and state the next expected update. Save that response. Follow up against the stated date or published procedure, rather than opening repeated tickets. A formal complaint can be appropriate if a complete submission receives no meaningful handling.
Security warning: Never provide a seed phrase, private key, password, live 2FA code or unrestricted remote access. For wallet-control checks, use only the verified provider’s documented process; do not sign unfamiliar transactions or messages sent by someone claiming to be support.
Build an Evidence Trail from Origin to Deposit
A useful submission connects the economic source to the exchange balance. For example, salary paid into a bank account, a transfer to an earlier exchange, a crypto purchase and the later deposit should form a traceable sequence. Evidence of lawful earnings and evidence of the transfer route serve different purposes.
| Funds or activity | Documents to consider | What needs to connect |
|---|---|---|
| Salary or savings | Payslips, bank statements and relevant tax records. | Income receipts, accumulated funds and payments used to purchase crypto. |
| Business revenue | Contracts, invoices, bank statements and company records. | The paying customer, actual receipt, business purpose and account holder. |
| Earlier crypto purchases | Exchange statements, trade exports, deposit and withdrawal records. | Original purchase, subsequent trades and transfers to the restricted account. |
| P2P purchases | Order IDs, payment receipts, platform records and available correspondence. | Each purchase, its bank payment and the corresponding crypto receipt. |
| Self-hosted wallet transfers | Wallet addresses, hashes and earlier funding records. | Control of the relevant wallet and how its assets were acquired. |
| Gift, inheritance or asset sale | Gift or estate documents, sale agreement and payment records. | The legal basis, payer, amount received and subsequent acquisition of crypto. |
For DeFi activity, include swaps, bridges, staking rewards and relevant contract addresses. Explain gaps or unavailable records explicitly. A newly written explanation cannot replace a missing historical record, but it can identify what alternative evidence is available.
Provide the requested period and necessary identifiers. Ask before redacting details needed for verification, and use the secure upload channel. Keep a copy of exactly what was submitted.
A Practical Reply to a Compliance Request
Adapt the following wording to the facts and the platform’s questions:
“Regarding case [reference], my account has been restricted since [date]. The affected transaction is [asset, amount, date and hash or platform reference]. The funds originated from [specific source] and reached this account through [brief route]. Attached are [numbered documents], which connect the source, purchase and transfer. Please confirm receipt, specify any remaining evidence required and clarify which functions remain restricted and when I should expect an update.”
If your earlier response contained an error, correct it expressly and explain why. Quietly replacing a document or changing the explanation can make the record harder to assess.
When Support Should Become a Formal Complaint
A support request asks for operational assistance. A formal complaint records dissatisfaction with the provider’s handling and seeks a defined remedy. You do not need to wait indefinitely for a chat agent to suggest it, but use the procedure for the entity serving your account.
Article 71 of MiCA Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 requires in-scope crypto-asset service providers to offer free complaint handling and assess complaints fairly and promptly. This is a procedural protection, not a guarantee that withdrawals will be restored. Check the provider’s published complaints policy and applicable rules for response deadlines and external escalation.
Your complaint should include:
- The contracting entity, account identifier and existing case references.
- The restriction date, affected assets and functions, with a short chronology.
- The questions asked, documents supplied and acknowledgements received.
- The specific handling problem, such as repeated unanswered submissions or unexplained document rejection.
- The remedy sought: a substantive review, clarification of missing evidence, restoration where lawful or an explanation of the permitted exit process.
Keep proof of submission. If the decision is unsatisfactory or the applicable deadline is missed, check the competent regulator, available dispute-resolution body and court route. A regulator may investigate compliance without resolving your individual repayment claim. A criminal report is relevant to suspected crime, not a substitute for a routine account complaint.
For EU and EEA users, the brand name alone does not establish the correct jurisdiction. Check the legal entity in your terms, account notices and authorisation records. An offshore entity serving a European customer does not automatically provide the same remedies as an EU-authorised CASP; EEA procedures also require country-specific checks.
Mistakes That Make the Review Harder
- Opening many parallel tickets fragments the evidence. Keep one main reference and link any necessary security or complaint case to it.
- Sending a tax return without the transaction trail leaves the deposit unexplained. Connect income, purchase and transfer.
- Describing every payment as personal savings can conflict with business or third-party records. Explain the actual arrangement.
- Trying a VPN, another person’s account or smaller transfers to bypass controls can create further problems. Use the authorised review route.
- Paying an unofficial “unfreezing agent” creates a second loss risk. Verify the recipient and written scope before engaging anyone.
- Assuming account closure means immediate forfeiture can obscure the next step. Ask whether an exit withdrawal is permitted and under what conditions.
Possible Outcomes and When Legal Help Is Useful
A review may produce another document request, full restoration, withdrawal-only access, a partial release or account closure with an exit process. A legal hold may remain despite complete documents. A complaint response and the release of funds are separate events; there is no universal 24-hour or 30-day unfreezing rule.
Legal assistance is particularly useful when a substantial balance is inaccessible, complete submissions repeatedly fail, ownership documents conflict, the contracting entity is unclear or sanctions, law enforcement or a formal deadline is involved. The first task is to identify the basis of the restriction and a remedy the recipient can actually provide.

Any engagement should define the initial deliverable, fees and limits; no adviser can guarantee release or override a lawful order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still deposit while withdrawals are blocked?
Sometimes the interface allows it, but that does not mean new funds will be withdrawable. Avoid adding assets until the provider clarifies how they will be treated. Preserve evidence if an incoming transfer was already initiated.
What if I no longer have the original purchase records?
Request archived statements from the previous exchange or bank. Provide available hashes, trade exports and dated correspondence, explaining the missing period. Ask whether alternative evidence is acceptable; acceptance is not automatic.
Does a successful KYC check mean withdrawals must resume?
No. Identity verification, transaction review and security checks can be separate. Ask whether the identity issue is resolved and what other requirement remains outstanding.
Can I ask for a partial withdrawal?
Yes, particularly if the review appears to concern one transaction or asset. Identify the amount requested and explain the basis. The provider may still be unable to release it because of the scope of the review or legal restriction.
Can you communicate with the exchange on my behalf?
A lawyer can usually prepare and submit correspondence where the provider accepts authorised representation. It may require a power of attorney and verification of the representative. You may still need to complete identity checks personally.
Can I claim losses caused by the restriction?
That depends on the legal basis of the hold, the contract, applicable law and proof of loss. Market movements alone do not establish liability. Preserve rejected withdrawal requests and relevant dates so counsel can assess causation and available remedies.
